When one looks at Japan on a globe or world map, they typically see the four major islands. Actually, Japan is an archipelago made up of over 6,000 islands. Some people are somewhat familiar with the four major islands, a few with the fifth largest, but almost none of us are familiar with any other island in the archipelago and I suspect only a small percentage of the people of Japan have ever visited more than about seven or eight of the islands in their homeland.
